...AutoUpdate Password

Just downloaded and installed the Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac: Home Edition on an iMac.  In the preferences for AutoUpdate, there is a user name and password (dots) already populated.  It is grayed out, whether I unlock the preference or not.  I can only change the 2 options at the top...when it checks for updates.  Is this scenario a normal thing for this software?

  • Hello markzabel,

this is normal. The updating infrastructure requires credentials - even though the product and its updates are free - and changing them would cause AutoUpdate to fail. It won't make sense to mail you the credentials and request you enter them, so they are simply set during install and unchangeable afterwards. These fields are there because the interface is the same as in the (paid) corporate version (where also the update location is settable).

  • I get the message "could not contact primary server" even though internet is up and running fine.

  • This "account" doesn't gather any personal information from my machine during the installation and afterwards, right?
