Using Sophos

Ok, I maybe in the right place, maybe not.

First I found an article saying Sophos was the best for Macintosh users.

I thought I downloaded it . Then a game from PopCap claimed I needed to down load a new version of Flash player. So I downloaded the new FlashPlayer, I thought. BUT every time I try to play the games it has a tag saying to download Flash Player. It says "you may need to turn off your Virus protection"

How do I know if I have Sophos virus Protection, AND how do I turn it off and back on after.

Thank you for any information you may provide me.

  • First item:

Did you download the DMG file, open it, and run the installer?  Do you now have a shield with an S in the middle in your menu bar (not dock)?

    If so, then it's installed.

Second item: if you're worried about Flashback, PopCap Games is not distributing it as far as I know... so if you actually went to adobe.com and downloaded the Flash Player update, then you've installed the legitimate one.

That "turn off your virus protection" recommendation is a BAD idea for flash games -- you should never need to do so, especially on a Mac.  The only software that should require you to disable virus protection is software that modifies how your computer operates in some way, or needs read/write access to files that are restricted to accounts that have system-wide access.  Most software should work just fine with only access to your own user areas.

That said, disabling the "on-access" feature of SAV HE is done by clicking the S shield, selecting "Open Preferences..." clicking the "On-access Scanning" tab, clicking the lock to make changes, authenticating, and then clicking the Stop Scanning button.
