High CPU Usage - Intercheck

Hi,

I upgraded to Sophos for Mac Home 8.0.2.C. When backup with Time machine, openning Lotus Symphony or installing new software (as Office 2011), Intercheck uses high CPU (more than 100%). I have a C2D 2.4/4GB with OS X Lion.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot.

  • I recently installed Sophos 8.0.4C on Mac OS X 10.6.8 and then, a few days later, upgraded libra office (only mentioning this because i've seen posts linking the high usage to an install).   I've noticed frequent horrible performance for a few days and just noticed that the intel Intercheck process is at 99% cpu.  [ five minutes later it's back to <1%.   Dunno what's going on; however, during this bad performance I haven't seen any other processes hogging cpu or memory, so my best guess is that it's related to intercheck.   [BTW, i have no network drives attached.  Also btw, I haven't tried killing the intercheck process yet, as I've seen mentioned i other posts.]

  • I'm not sure about Lotus, but Libre loads a lot of Java code -- and if you have archive scanning on, each jar file will be extracted and the contents scanned during the load process.  All OpenXML and OpenDocument files (being zipped XML) will also be extracted and the contents scanned.  Since many compressed temp stub files are also created, these will also be extracted and scanned, and they change continuously.

So the best recommendation to make to improve performance is to disable archive scanning for on-access, and just make sure you do a scheduled archive scan from time to time to ensure nothing's lurking inside any archives.
