On-access scanning not working

I have similar issues as some other people here.

  • The menu bar is grayed, is says "On-access scanning not working" and there is no way that I know of to get it to be black.
  • There are occasional messages on the screen to the effect that Sophos doesn't work
  • The log file says, repeatedly, that com.sophos.intercheck: Fatal Error: Unable to initialise virus detection engine [0x00135240] Sophos Anti-Virus cannot continue
  • I installed Mountain Lion about 2 months ago but this behavior regarding "On-access" appears only in the last few hours.
  • I have deleted Sophos and then reinstalled it, with no changes.

For me this problem is new but I see that other people see it for a couple of months. I wonder if there is a workaround.

Thank you for giving away this fine program.

  • Add me to the list.  Check of log shows: "Fatal Error:Unable to initialise virus detection engine"; and, "Sophos Anti-Virus cannot continue"

Was running OK 'til  a week or so ago.  I've tried Uninstall & Re-Install with no success.  Trying to scan drives results in a lock-up.
