On-access scanning not working

I have similar issues as some other people here.

  • The menu bar is grayed, is says "On-access scanning not working" and there is no way that I know of to get it to be black.
  • There are occasional messages on the screen to the effect that Sophos doesn't work
  • The log file says, repeatedly, that com.sophos.intercheck: Fatal Error: Unable to initialise virus detection engine [0x00135240] Sophos Anti-Virus cannot continue
  • I installed Mountain Lion about 2 months ago but this behavior regarding "On-access" appears only in the last few hours.
  • I have deleted Sophos and then reinstalled it, with no changes.

For me this problem is new but I see that other people see it for a couple of months. I wonder if there is a workaround.

    I'm having the exact same issue which started Monday, Nov. 5th. I do not have Mountain Lion installed yet, but prior version. Have run Updates and everything is current across my MacBook Pro. Ran a complete system scan with Sophos and found one threat which I ended up having to remove manually...but I still get the same error message as is in the Subject line of this post.  Have Sophos Anti-Virus version 8.0.8C.  Please keep us posted as to what to do - if we have to do something from our end. Thanks!!
