yes; download an EICAR sample and see if it triggers an alert.
EICAR is totally harmless, but is detected by every reputable AV software package out there for testing purposes.
Wikipedia has the EICAR string embedded directly in its own page entry (which can cause that page to be detected with no other action taken than viewing the page, in some cases).
