Can anybody help? I don't know much about this kind of stuff. I've had the free Sophos Anti-virus on my Mac at home for about a year. No problems at all. Yesterday I left my Mac running a Sophos scan, which usually takes about 30 minutes. When I next went to use it about 3 hours later, the first thing I expected to see is a message saying that the scan was completed and indicating what actions (if any) were necessary on my part. This wasn't there and the Sophos icon which is normally at the top the screen was missing completely. (The numerous windows which were previously open at pages from various internet sites had all shut down too). I looked in the applications folder and as well as the original Sophos installation being in there, there was an application "Remove Sophos", which was downloaded or applied (I'm not very sure of the right terminology here) during the period that I had left the computer - ie timed at 13-06 on 11th December. It appears that during my absence a programme or application ran to remove my anti-virus protection, which resulted in Sophos being taken off. This is a complete mystery to me.
Can anybody help to explain this? I have since tried to download the free software again, but am getting that message which other people have referred to recently on this forum which says "cannot contact Sophos even though you appear to be connected to the internet" .
I appear to now have no AV protection, and am seriously concerned about the security of my Mac. Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated.
