8.0.6c with MacOSX10.8.0 - cannot authenticate to make changes

I am unable to switch On-access Scanning on because when I try and click on the padlock labelled "Click the lock to make changes" all that happens is that the text flashes briefly and I do not get a dialog to authenticate. I have not been able to find any reference to this specific problem in any other post here. Nothing appears in the Console when I click the padlock icon.

    The new version *should* auto-update -- if you're running the installer for the first time, you need to download the right one for your OS version, but if it's already installed and you upgrade your OS, the underlying software should work just fine.  However, sometimes things happen during an OS upgrade, and a clean install of the software is the simplest way to catch all the possible problems.
