Question about activity on toolbar icon.

I'v only been using Sophos for a few days, and just wondering what's meant by the left hand side of the status icon in the toolbar, when it seems to be cycling after I start my computer. My thoughts are that it is in a scanning process, as it quickly becomes a solid black color after cycling from grey to black.

    the icon is animated when updates are downloaded. The color tells you whether on-access scanning is on (black) or off (gray), otherwise there's no indication of scanning activity. except for the
