Message says "Sophos Anti-Virus is not running"

I've suddenly started getting a "Sophos Anti-Virus is not running" message after restarting my Mac. Running OS X 10.7.4. When I check Activity Monitor, SophosUIServer and SophosAutoUpdate appear to be running normally. The application itself does not run in the background and never has. Why am I getting this message?

    Thanks for the note, we have been trying to identify the root cause of the errors "Unable to initialise virus detection engine" but so far haven't been able to (it doesn't happen for us). So I need your help. Could you run the Sophos Diagnostics Utility and send me the output? You can download the SDU from here:

    That tool will collect a lot of information about the current state of your system, and may help us identify the root cause for this baffling problem.
