Message says "Sophos Anti-Virus is not running"

I've suddenly started getting a "Sophos Anti-Virus is not running" message after restarting my Mac. Running OS X 10.7.4. When I check Activity Monitor, SophosUIServer and SophosAutoUpdate appear to be running normally. The application itself does not run in the background and never has. Why am I getting this message?

    To verify the program is working as advertised, go to wikipedia and search for eicar.  Download the sample on that page, and you should get a detection alert.  Don't worry -- eicar is a test file used across the industry to verify whether or not your scanner is functioning correctly.  The file does not actually do anything.
