Message says "Sophos Anti-Virus is not running"

I've suddenly started getting a "Sophos Anti-Virus is not running" message after restarting my Mac. Running OS X 10.7.4. When I check Activity Monitor, SophosUIServer and SophosAutoUpdate appear to be running normally. The application itself does not run in the background and never has. Why am I getting this message?

  • Update: Just restarted my computer again. This time the Sophos shield icon is no longer in the Menu Bar. Same message appeared a few minutes after restart. I'm going to uninstall Sophos, download it again and reinstall since I don't know what else to do. Anti-virus software that can't be relied on to always be on the job isn't worth much.
