Did Sophos Free delete itself when updating???

Hello all. I booted up my mac today to receive error messages from Sophos free saying "Sophos Aniti-Virus is not working". I have sophos shortcutted in the dock, so I tried to load it up from there and got a question mark over the icon. When I tried to find Sophos using spotlight only the uninstaller came up - the app itself was nowhere to be found. Am I right in thinking Sophos free installs are auto-updating to version 8, and could a fault in this process have actually deleted Sophos? Of course I'm aware that a malware could have wiped it, and I've uninstalled Sophos, re-installed with latest version, and am doing a full scan now. Also, other than Clam AV does anyone know of any other free mac scanners I can run for a second opinion on my mac? For that matter, any decent paid ones? Many thanks
