No Shield

I have installed the antivirus software and do not see a shield in my menu bar.  Any suggestions?

    I've also had the shield disappear on me too, I've tried all the steps listed, and in the end just rebooted my mac again and the shield came back, but I've had the disappearing shield happen on 2 seperate macs, it seems a bit 50/50 whether the shield icon appears after the reboot, whether that means the AV isn't working if the shield isn't there I dont actually know.
