Sophos Anti-Virus.app 7.2.2 crashes, will not launch; incomprehensible application support files

Some time ago, I used

/Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg

to remove SAV

On 2011-01-04 following installation of 7.2.2,

Sophos Anti-Virus.app would not launch. Crashed every time.

Eight of eight application support files, property lists, were unreadable by plutil — all eight failed the default -lint option.

Application support files written by 7.2.2 on 2011-01-05 seem to be OK; they were readable by plutil and by Property List Editor.app

It seems that the format used by the .app for property lists in the

~/Library/Application Support/Sophos Anti-Virus/

area has changed at some point between 7.2.1C and 7.2.2. However, it's difficult to tell when

Crash reports etc. at

in particular:

*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInvalidArgumentException', reason: '*** -[NSKeyedUnarchiver initForReadingWithData:]: incomprehensible archive (0x62, 0x70, 0x6c, 0x69, 0x73, 0x74, 0x30, 0x30)'

Copies of the troublesome application support files are at

http://www.wuala.com/%23%23Sophos-Mac/2011/01/05/a

Workaround

Set aside application support files relating to all scans, including the predefined Scan This Mac.

Observation

Seeing Schedules in relation to a version that does not support schedules makes me wonder whether something from a private beta is creeping into public releases.

Suggestions

When any edition of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X fails to read a property list that is incomprehensible, it should fail more gracefully; not crash.

If the troublesome property lists relate to Scan This Mac, those files should be overwritten with good files.

If the troublesome property lists relate to a custom scan previously created by the user, the .app should:

• report the trouble

• set aside the troublesome files

• invite the user to recreate that scan.
