Preferences stuck on 'Scan Local Drives' (in a virtual machine)

http://www.wuala.com/grahamperrin/public/2010/11/14/b screenshot 001 highlights the icon for a difference pane (selected using option-tab) but no matter which icon I click (or select, they key Return):

  • the lower part of the window remains stuck on Scan Local Drives

A possible trigger for this oddity

Whilst preparing for the screenshot at http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/SAV-and-TimeMachine/m-p/817#M497 the list of menu items was displayed far longer than usual, and I moved the cursor to beyond the VM

Workaround

A restart of the guest machine did not work around.

After a few hours away from both host and guest machines — whether the guest machine slept during that time, I don't know — the issue seemed to resolve itself.

I have taken a snapshot of the VM, and I might take a Console view of things, but there's no rush.

Host machine

Mac OS X 10.6.5 Build 10H574

Virtualisation

Oracle VirtualBox 3.2.10 r66523

It should be noted that in this version, support for Mac OS X Server is experimental.

Guest machine

Mac OS X Server 10.6.5 Build 10H574

Sophos Anti-Virus 7.2.1C
— license for this Home Edition might imply that it shouldn't be used with a server OS, but this is strictly a test environment (and I might as easily use the normal edition in my situation).

Relevance/priority

In itself this bug is uninteresting. It's also extremely unlikely that people will leave a menu, within a preferences pane, present for as long as I did.

I expect no action in response to this post, but oddities like this may come to my mind if we find ourselves puzzling extensively over issues such as Unable to complete login after reboot.

  • Since my previous post, in the same virtual machine, I have seen two or more comparable oddities.

Not absolutely stuck (as in the opening post) on any preference pane, but the large icon that's highlighted/outlined in the toolbar of the Preferences… window is not a match for what's below.

See for example http://www.wuala.com/grahamperrin/public/2010/11/15/a screenshot 003:

    • whilst viewing the On-access Scanning Pane, there's a highlight on the Scan Local Drives icon.

    Keyboard acceleration

Uses of the keyboard may hold a clue to this bug:

    a) to switch between applications normally, without a VM, I typically use command

    (left)-tab

    b) to switch between applications in VirtualBox in a Mac OS X Server guest, I typically use

    command (right)-tab

    c) to switch from guest to host whilst (for example) a drop-down menu is present — preparing to use command-shift-4 for a screenshot of the VM — I typically use a slow-paced

    command (left)

    command (left)-tab
