How do I know its working?

I installed Sophos with the Administrator acount on my MBP and configured it for real time scanning.  When I'm logged in as a non Admin user, I no longer see the icon at the top of the screen.  Is Sophos still scanning files as they are accessed in real time even though its not the Admin account that is currently being used?  Also, is there a benign test file that I can get to verify that Sophos is working?

  • This is a very useful post.  We've had a number of posts on here talking about how the shield icon was not in the menu bar, and linking it to using a user account after installing via an admin account might shed some light on the underlying issue.

First off, the shield should show up in the menu bar for all users on your machine.  Does it still show up with the admin account?

Secondly, you can test using Eicar (note that the Wikipedia entry actually contains the eicar test string, so anyone with AV real-time scanning installed could get a detection when attempting to load the article).

  • I used this site:

    http://www.eicar.org/85-0-Download.html

clicked to download the file in Safari, and Sophos immediately tagged it as a threat. Cool!

    Thank you for this program.
