Lost the download!

I started the download  process, and it properly did it in the download window (I'm using OS 10.6.8 and Firefox 3.6.6), but when completed the window went empty, and the download was nowhere to be found, anywhere on the desktop. I believe this happened to me the last  time I downloaded somehing from the web..the downloaded file disappeared. I looked in applications and utilities and could not find it. What's up?

  • When downloading files, they show up in your download folder.  By default, this folder is named Downloads and is found under the Places sidebar in Finder windows.  If you have it set to the desktop and the file isn't there, the download likely didn't complete.

To locate the file, you can also navigate to Tools->Downloads from the Firefox menu bar.  Control/right clicking on the file will let you either open the file in place, or show it in the Finder.  If the file is not listed there as you indicate, then either the download did not actually complete, or the clear button was pressed.

Once you locate the file, you will need to open it.  This will mount it as a virtual disk in the Finder, and open a Finder window with two icons to double click on -- the first basicly instructs you to come to this forum if you have issues.  The second installs the product on your computer, including installing an uninstaller in your Applications folder.

The product has a number of parts, only one of which is the Sophos Anti-Virus.app file in your Applications folder.  The product should start protecting your Mac via on-access scanning as soon as installation has completed.  Running an on-demand or manual scan can be done from within the App itself.  Manual scans allow you to limit the area to be scanned, and change exactly what kind of files should be scanned, and how deeply to scan them.

It is generally a good idea to run the Scan Local Drives scan once after installing the product, as it will check your entire computer for anything suspicious.  After that, you can usually trust the on-access scanner to detect things as they are accessed from the hard drive.

If you have recurring issues of this nature with Firefox, try re-installing Firefox and/or using Safari to download the software.

  • Firefox probably has its own download folder, check Firefox preferences to locate it.
