System becomes unresponsive

I tried the AV out and found it had negative effects on my system. I have a Macbook Pro 3,1 with a 2.4ghz processor, 4gb of ram and a 500gb hd running 10.6.4.

I noticed that start ups had become longer and icons on my desktop weren't immediately there, instead there were placeholder dashed rectangles.

I attempted 2 separate scans. Both resulted about the same. My MBP became unresponsive, the items remaining count stopped and the CPU temperature dropped from an elevated working temp to a lower idle temp. I wasn't able to check through the activity monitor due to the unresponsiveness. Both times I had to press and hold the power button to shut down because clicking restart didnt respond.

Anyone else having this problem?

  • Hi all,

Is everyone using  Windows 7 on their Bootcamp partition? Or is there a mixture of Windows OS that the problem is being experienced on?

    Thanks

  • Thanks Chogidog,

If you could all also follow ibell63's lead and run a scan using terminal/sweep and advise on the file the freeze occurs. This will give us further valuable information.

    Thanks

    Marf

  • Marf,

No problem on the terminal/sweep...except I don't know how to do that.

If you could give me some instructions or point me towards some that would be great.

  • Ok, I'm in terminal, but I'm afraid I'm not very fluent so I'll need the command that that you would like me to enter to get the scan you're looking for.

  • Hi Chogidog,

Sure, not a problem please can you use the following syntax in Terminal:

    sweep <bootcamppartition>  -dn >> /Users/<user>/Desktop/SweepLog.txt

Where <bootcamppartition> is the name of your bootcamp partition and <user> is the name of the currently logged on user on the Mac. The -dn switch is to display the name of the file being scanned this will give you a visual of the scanning process.

Please make a note of the file that is freezes on, also this can be found in the SweepLog.txt on the desktop of the Mac.

Further information on sweep can be obtained in Terminal by running the following command:

    sweep -h

Please could you also provide the panic logs you mentioned earlier by sending them to:

    Thanks

  • Marf,

When I try that syntax, substituting,<BOOTCAMP> and my user name into it I get:

    "

-bash: BOOTCAMP: No such file or directory"  as a reply.

I've tried a few variations on capitalization on bootcamp and spacing in my user name but I keep running into the same thing.

Sorry that I'm not experienced enough to pick up on what to fix here, could you guide me some more?

  • I am not using Win 7 but Vista x64 on my boot camp.

Since I have unticked archives and did a custom scan all has been good.

  • Chogidog,

I am guessing you tried this command:

    "sweep BOOTCAMP -dn>>/Users/<username>/Desktop/SweepLog.txt"

The issue is that the path BOOTCAMP is not correct.

Instead, try this "sweep /Volumes/BOOTCAMP -dn>>/Users/<username>/Desktop/SweepLog.txt"

This is the proper path to the BOOTCAMP volume.

  • BTW, I am running it now but I can't get it to freeze while using the command line, unfortunately, I have work until 4pm EST, but I can try it again after that.

I will post results some time this evening.
