System becomes unresponsive

I tried the AV out and found it had negative effects on my system. I have a Macbook Pro 3,1 with a 2.4ghz processor, 4gb of ram and a 500gb hd running 10.6.4.

I noticed that start ups had become longer and icons on my desktop weren't immediately there, instead there were placeholder dashed rectangles.

I attempted 2 separate scans. Both resulted about the same. My MBP became unresponsive, the items remaining count stopped and the CPU temperature dropped from an elevated working temp to a lower idle temp. I wasn't able to check through the activity monitor due to the unresponsiveness. Both times I had to press and hold the power button to shut down because clicking restart didnt respond.

Anyone else having this problem?

  • Sorry for the delay getting back, I had to go out for a while.

I ran the custom scan you requested Marf and it completed in about 1.5 hours with no issues beyond the heat.

So do you think that the issue is the Bootcamp or the archives or a bit of both?

  • I am currently running a custom scan with no archives or bootcamp and its already nearly halfway with no issues so far.  Fingers crossed.  I am not sure which one it is tho, archives or bootcamp?

  • osxtacy,

I repaired permissions about a month ago. The scan seemed to go fine when the compressed and archived files and bootcamp were excluded.

I'm aware of the temps involved with doing video conversions, I do alot of them myself. I've just never seen that happen when doing an av scan before.

I'm actually ok with the temp itself, I know the MBP can handle it. I just wanted to be complete in mentioning all conditions that I noticed during the scan where it wasn't working properly.

    Thanks

  • Hi Chogidog,

Thank you for running the tests and your feedback. To everyone else please keep us updated on the tests and on your feedback. I will look into this further for you and get back to you shortly.

  • I was able to get a complete and timely scan on my mbp by making a custom scan that included the main mac partition, but excluded the bootcamp. I also unchecked the scan compressed and archived files. Perhaps that may help you?

  • My scan has now completed correctly and quite quickly, thats custom scan omitting bootcamp and unticking archives.

    Hope that helps

  • Thanks for the suggestion, but I guess I don't consider that a real solution - I'd essentially be limiting the files to be scanned.

  • Finished running a custom scan on "Macintosh HD" omitting BOOTCAMP.  Preferences were default so it did scan inside compressed files and archives.   Scan completed normally in about 2 hours and 15 minutes.  It did report 31 issues,  some of which seemed strange, for example, "unrecognized file format" on a couple of dmg files, one of which I tested and it mounted sucessfully.  There were also a few "corrupt file" reports on some zip files.  But it does appear that the major issues that I've reported, at least on my system, have to do with Sophos-AV attempting to scan the BOOTCAMP partition.

  • Hi

I've just downloaded and installed Sophos for Mac (Free Edition)... I was really pleased that you have decided to provide such an industry standard piece of software free to home users of Mac's... However on running a scan, I too am experiencing a system lock up each time a scan is generated.

So I am now eagerly awaiting a fix to this issue as it's clearly a problem for many and not just me.

Other than that I have always been impressed with your products as we use them at work....

  • Downloaded and installed Sophos for Mac (free home edition) this evening. As you'd expect, all straightforward and no problems. The 'Scan Local Drives' seems to be taking quite a while to complete but I am now using my MacBook quite heavily and TimeMachine-ing about 10GB of new data too - only myself to blame for that one then!

I had been using Intego X5 for a couple of years, and in the last month trialled X6 so interesting to compare real-time scan performance and impacts. Of the three X5 used huge amounts of RAM (up to 900MB) with X6 being a big improvement (nearer 100MB). However, by comparison the Sophas AV RAM allocation is TINY by comparison. There seems to be little impact on day-to-day usage (before my TimeMachine & local drive scan started hitting the disk I/O).

So, based on a few hours usage, it's a big thumbs up and thanks to Sophos. Saved me some money too.
