How frequent are virus definitions updated by Sophos?

I connect to my work VPN through Check Point Endpoint Security On Demand. It uses an applet in the broweser that detects if virus definitions have been updated in the last 10 days. It is not allowing me to connect because it says Sophos definitions have not been updated in the last 10 days. However, Sophos says it is up to date. Is it possible that Sophos is up to date, but has not released new definitions within the last 10 days? Version: 7.2.6C, Threat Detection Engine: 3.18.0, Threat data: 4.64, Release date: April 4, 2011, Protects against 2466890 threats

  • Based upon a previous thread, it was discovered that CheckPoint was NOT basing their date on the latest IDE releases, but was instead basing it on the modification date of some other file -- I believe it was to do with the threat data package, possibly the vdl.dat file, which is released monthly.  As a result, until they fix this check,  the software will only pass their freshness test  for approximately the first two weeks of every month.

    See thread here:

As Sophos doesn't use the OS-based modification date itself, you could try running the touch terminal command on the files in the ~/Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/VDL/ folder and see if that fixes the problem for you.  Please let us know what you find :)
