itunes causing beach ball of death with Sophos installed.

Unfortunate problem as I was actually finding Sophos free to be quite unobtrusive. With Sophos installed playing music in itunes is causing the dreaded beachball of death. I tried a couple of things to fix this, disabling genius and home sharing stopped the hangs from being fatal but as soon as one hang had cleared a new one would start seconds later essentially making itunes unusable. Uninstalling Sophos free has fixed the issue.

I had no problems with itunes and Sophos before yesterdays update. Any idea what the issue might be?

I'm on a 2008 imac with a 2.8 GHz C2D and a 4gb of ram. OSX itunes and Sophos where all fully updated.

  • Wasn't having any problems up until a few weeks ago. I have recently upgraded to the latest version of iTunes, but I believe the problem existed prior to that. iTunes locks up my whole Mac after a few minutes of downloading.

I also noticed that my Trash can takes several seconds (10 - 15 sometimes) to empty. I have the SSD and this use to be pretty much < 1 second (even with Sophos installed), no matter what's in the trash ?

I disabed Sophos today and now iTunes is working and my trash can empties quickly :-(   i am a fan of Sophos as it has found malware/viruses in files that I work with - usually something from windows that's on my external HD, especially in old data.

Not sure if the version of Sophos has been updated since I installed it several months ago - sometime in October I believe was the initial install.
