Installation Failed Message

I just d/l Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition, ran the installation process and keep getting this message.

The message appears in "Summary".

"The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

  • I tried messing around with this a bit more.  I tried running the install packages within the main install package one at a time.  I have isolated the problem to the SophosUI7.2.0.pkg, which is the only package that produces the error at the end of running.  I figured out that the SophosUIServer program (located in /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus) is what puts the shield icon into the task bar.  I added the SophosUIServer program to my Login Items, and it did load on startup, however it had a white x through the shield, indicating that it could not update.  Upon clicking Update Now, the Sophos AutoUpdate Status screen appears, connects to the Sophos Server, and then both the screen and shield icon disappear.  In the Sophos Anti-Virus Application, both the Update Now and Cancel Update options are then grayed out.  When I tried to load the SophosUIServer application again a few minutes later, It opened and loaded in the taskbar, but I also got the error of "Could not update Sophos Anti-Virus" displayed.  So, I am resolving right now to remove the program and try installing after the next version is released, unless someone out there has an idea of how to resolve this problem.  In its current state, this program is not usable for me.

  • After having exactly the same error, I just managed to install correctly (MacOS X 10.6 on a brand new iMac, freshly upgraded to 10.6.5).

The problem comes from the /Library/LaunchDaemons folder.

installd[4324]: ./preflight: launchctl: Couldn't stat("/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.sophos.autoupdate.plist"): No such file or directory

I don't know why, because its name, location and unix authorizations are exactly the same as the folder on my other machine (MacOS X 10.5.8, with Sophos Home already working).

What I did is just importing three files from my other machine, putting them into the folder:

    com.sophos.autoupdate.plist

    com.sophos.intercheck.plist

    com.sophos.notification.plist

And here it is ! The installer now works correctly (also confirmed by /private/var/log/install.log)

So, for legal reasons I won't send you these files, but I'm sure you can find a friend with a Mac..

AFAIR installation of Sophos Anti-Virus 7.x in safe mode does not produce a working installation.

To complete installation, restart the OS in normal mode and repeat installation.
