Instructions not working

Hi All,

I haven’’’’t been able to clean up a threat in my Time Machine backup, although I’’’’ve tried to follow the instructions given in the documents I’’’’ve found in the FreeTalk forum.

I’’’’m using Mavericks on an old 2007 iMac with 4 GB memory and the latest update (today) of Sophos HE 9.0.7. (Incidentally, icons for both v.9.0.7 and v.9.0.1 appear in my Applications folder; double-clicking v.9.0.1 causes v.9.0.7 to start up, whereas opening v.9.0.7 only opens the v.8 updater program. Is it necessary to retain both??).

After a scan of all local drives Mal/Phish-A appeared in the Quarantine Manager with an action listed of Cleanup. Clicking the Cleanup button started the whirling action-in-process icon but when it did not complete after approximately two and a half hours I used Force Quit.

I then tried to use the procedure for a custom scan given on page 15 in the June 2013 article, ‘‘‘‘Sophos AV for Mac OSX: HE HELP’’’’, product version 9C. Under ‘‘‘‘Add a custom scan of a threat,’’’’ step 4 says, “in QM do one of the following (slightly modified wording):

In the list of threats select & drag the threat to a blank space in the Custom Scans list

In the Threat Details Box select & drag to a blank space in the Customs Scan list

In the Threat Details Box click Path&Filename, then choose Create a Custom Scan of

these files from the pop-up menu.

None of the above three options work: when I attempt them nothing happens; no filenames or paths can be dragged. Attempting to select the threat by its name only results in a window on the Sophos site that describes the threat.

I would much appreciate some advice!

Brell

  • You're best off, for Time Machine, locating the item in the scan log, and then opening TM finding the item and deleting manually (see video below).  That or clear the item from quarantine (clear list) and exclude the TM drive from future scans (items in TM will be deleted as newer backups are done and excluding the drive stops items being re-directed.
