Download hangs

I have a new Mac Book Air (*GB 1600 Mhz DDR3 with th e 512Gb SSD and using OS X 10.9.1 (Mavericks).  I was running Sophos  on my previous machine and transferred it to the new machine ( now showing as Version 8.0.22c engine 3.50.1 with threat data 4.97). However, it now tries to update (wireless) and keeps running for hours (over 8 hours trying to update). It does not give access to cancel the update or any way to stop the update running (even if I disconnect from the network). Even after restarting the machine the Sophos upadter starts again and it can't be stopped!

I have used Sophos for a number of years without problems so help here will be appreciated.
