Sophos 9.08 uses up free memory in a minute or so

I'm running a Mac Pro with 16G of memory and the latest Mavericks OS X. I noticed that my normally free memory of 7G or so was down to hundreds of Megs, and that InterCheck seemed to be the process that was most active. Once I stopped Sophos On-Access the memory returned to my usual 7G or so free within a minute or so. When I re-enabled On-Access it dropped back to several hundred Meg available within a minute or so.

Help!

Any further info I can provide?

  • Where exactly are you look for the 'free memory' value?  What does 'top' show?  This is my top output for example...

Or you could find the top process by memory consumption with this...

    ps -amcwwwxo "command %mem %cpu" | grep -v grep | head -13

    Example...

Was the on-access scanner taking all the memory?  You should check if this happens often or a one off, what apps are open etc. - those are the first things.  And of course does the computer actually have a performance hit, or is this just a read-out that doesn't look right.

  • Thanks for the reply. Had to go out of town for several weeks, and now that I'm back the problem has not happened again. I'll save your info so I can get more diagnostic data if it should happen again.
