Scan will not proceed.

Having installed Sophos 9.0.5 today, I am unable to ran a scan of my hard drive. The window indicates that calculation takes place but the scan does not start. I have been able to prepare a 'Custom Scan" and that appears OK. Also I am able to right click my Hard Drive and this proceeds to scan OK.  i am new to this forum so I hope that the message makes sense.

  • I think I understand:  You select 'Scan This Mac', the software looks at the whole drive and starts 'Calculating...' the items to scan but it never completes this step and so the scan doesn't start.

How long did you leave it?

You could try a few things:

    • Reboot and try again (if this is a fresh install).

    • Run a repair of the disk from Disk Utility ('Applications' folder, then 'Utilities' folder).

    • Configure the 'Scan This Mac' to not scan all local drives and also exclude compressed files.  Watch the video on scanning:

    • If all else fails create a custom scan of the whole hard drive.  You mention creating a custom scan but is that of the whole hard drive (i.e., '/')?

There is a similar post here: http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Scan-this-mac-will-never-complete-scanning-a-folder-actually/m-p/14081/highlight/true#M6604

  • Thanks for your input. I have rebooted without success and run the Disk Utilty with the end message "The volume John's iMac appears to be OK"

Configured the 'Scan my Mac' as suggested but the Scan does not proceed beyond the calculating stage for well in excess of a hour. When right clicking the window, I was able to access 'Scan settings' but the 'View scan log' & 'Duplicate options were greyed out.

Set up a Custon Scan also as suggested, excluding Time M/C and archived and compressed files. This ran OK and took 57 mins to complete. During this scan I was able to access 'View scan log' & 'Duplicate' which was not possible from the 'Scan my Mac' window.

Reporting some success (thank you) but it still seems wrong that the Scan system doesn't work as designed??

I would be interested to hear if you have further thoughts.

    Regards

  • Haven't forgotten about this problem.  Stick with the workaround you have for now (glad you have that).

I'm currently trying to find out what else our Support/Development teams would suggest.
