Slow loading caused by Sophos?

A friend with a Macbook Pro running OS X 10.8 had a problem with slow booting and slow launching of applications. Once an application opened it behaved normally. Having tried everything else I suggested he uninstall Sophos. He did this and the Macbook now loads normally. Any comments on this?

  • Bit more detail please...

    1. SAV 8 or 9?  If 8 try 9.
    2. Has your friend run a full scan of the computer ('Scan this Mac' scan)?  It may be faster post-scan.  Try it:  Full scan and reboot.  Any better?
    3. If SAV 9 is installed and the full scan hasn't improved things can you describe the 'slow booting' first.
      1. What's the increase in boot time?
      2. Does it get stuck in the boot process?
      3. What do you see?
      4. Does it have a Windows partition out of interest?
      5. Under System Preferences > Users & Groups > your user name > Login Items - what is listed?
      6. After a slow boot you could run the following from Terminal and check the log it writes to the Desktop for problems.
        sudo dmesg > ~/Desktop/bootlog.txt

  • Even after uninstalling Sophos the computer was slower than usual so that was not the whole problem, but after an update to 10.8.5 the  problem disappeared.
