custom scan won't stop, delete button greyed out

I have OSX version 10.8.4 and have been advised by my server that my Mac Pro has a trojan virus Conflcker.  I have had the same problem as many people here running a "Scan this Mac" - it simply stops at about 25% and hangs.  So I uninstalled Sophos, downloaded and installed it again and ran custom scans on my folders a few at a time.  This worked fine and I have almost finished scanning everything.  No threats have been identified, only issues which were corrupt or missing files, so I deleted those files.

But then I decided to scan the Library, and made the mistake of trying for the whole library at once and the problem occurred again - scan would not finish.  The delete button at the botton (-) is greyed out and there seems to be no other option for ending the scan.  So I tried for another custom scan and selected just a few folders.  This time it's not getting past he barber pole.  I can't seem to stop either scan.  If I quit Sophos it quits OK but then when I open it again it's still churning away at the two custom scans but not progressing.  I have gone into the scan settings but the option to untick scan inside archive files is greyed out.

Am not an IT person so would appreciate any help

  • From Spotlight (the magnifying glass icon in the top right) type 'Activity Monitor' and press enter.

Click on the '% CPU' column a couple of times so the processes using the most CPU are at the top.  It'll be at the top but the process you're looking for is 'SophosAVAgent'.  Select it and click the 'Quit Process' red button near the top left of the Activity Monitor program and then just click 'Quit' - 'Force Quit' if it has really hung.
