Autoupdate can't contact primary server.

Brand new install of OSX 10.6.8 and a new install of Sophos. Autoupdate fails with the error 'Could not contact primary server'. Console displays the error message as:

com.sophos.autoupdate: Error:	Could not contact primary server at 11:31 on 11 February 2013
com.sophos.autoupdate: Server was not available
com.sophos.autoupdate:

There are multiple other macs in the building with autoupdate working fine. In the Auto-Updater preferences the field 'Update from Primary Location' is set to 'Sophos' and is disabled, as well as the username, password, and proxy settings. Unlocking the page to make modifications only enables the top two checkboxes. Is this expected behavior? Why can't I change the Primary Location? I have tried restarting, uninstalling and reinstalling, and clicking on the date and time.

I've been looking through the forums and though there are many similar problems, none have provided an answer that works for me.

Any clues?
