How much bandwidth does an update consume? Can I schedule/approve downloads?

Hi. Can anyone give me an idea of the average file size downloaded during an update? I am on an expensive and limited internet connection and only have 1GB of reasonable speed bandwidth per month before my ISP throttles my connection.  I saw my first definitions update was c.56MB.  I can't afford to download this large a file each day.  Are the subsequent downloads smaller?  Any ideas about their approximate sizes?

Also, my bandwidth is unmetered from around 6pm to 8am.  Is there any way to automatically limit the download of updates to this time window, rather than doing it manually each day?

Many thanks for any info.

Cheers

  • Hello Kimoco,

once the install is complete (some threads suggests that there's one more full update right after initial install) you can expect a "major" update once per month. Definitions updates (.ide) are a few kB to some 10kB in size, on average there's half a dozen of them per day so you can expect a total 2-3MB per month.

You can't set a schedule for AutoUpdate although I assume it is possible to script enabling/disabling AutoUpdate. Another option is to set the AutoUpdate Interval at an appropriate time (after 6pm, when the Mac is usually on - note that when an interval is "missed" the time might shift) to 1 day.
