My files are deemed "threats" and Sophos won't let me open them

Hello, I recently installed Sophos Antivirus and ran a check of my computer and the only threats that Sophos found were WM97/Thus-T viruses on all of my Microsoft Word documents.  After the scan I discovered that I can't open up any of these files.  This is an issue because I write in my spare time and without access to these documents I'm stuck. Is there anyway I can get around this?  Can I "clean up" the threats without deleting the files?  If not, will uninstalling Sophos allow me to open these files again?  Any advice will help.

Thank you!

  • Hi Art,

Your documents probably do contain that macro virus. Its pretty common. The product is doing exactly what it is designed to do (block access to infected files).

If you really must access these infected documents, and are comfortable with the risks you are taking, then disable the on-access scanner before opening the documents in Word. Then copy the text out to a different application (TextEdit is a good one, it won't keep your document macros). Then re-enable the on-access scanner.
