DMG files

I just scan all my computer and external drives. I had to delete some corrupted files but there is so many DMG files that are listed as "unrecognised file format" . Hey guys , it's .dmg ! wake up ...   How can this application can find viruses if it's even not able to recognize a DMG file ? I have Lion , sophos home AV 8.0.6c. Up to date etc ...  Also, I'm a bit surprised that when some malwares are detect we could not delete them in Quarantine window, just have the options : 1-  clean and 2- delete list ( not delete files)  . we have to go find them and delete them manualy in the finder. what is this ? ...  Sophos has a lot of work with this free home Av.

  • DMG isn't a file format, it's a container.  What the scan isn't recognizing is the specific format embedded in the DMG file.  This is a known issue with a few filesystem types that can be embedded in a DMG -- feel free to submit any of these as "unrecognized filetype" via the Sophos file submission webpage.

Likely the reason that some of the malware detected couldn't be deleted is that it was deemed too dangerous to do so based on the file's location -- if it's in an archive or mixed in with other data that may be negatively impacted by deleting, we provide the clean option (which will still allow an option for the file to be deleted if the contents can't be cleaned appropriately).

I hope this at least partially answers your questions.
