How to remove sophos_detoured.dll from computer?

I bought this computer and it came loaded with a security system on it
and half of Sophos loaded. The Computer is a Dell Inspiron 1520 and I'm
running Windows XP on it.

I couldn't get Sophos fully uninstalled by Add/Remove programs so I used
a cnet recommended program to uninstall the pieces left. Everything was
gone except Sophos_detoured.dll when I rebooted the computer and now
that computer not only still has that file which I cannot get rid of,
but also will not allow me to connect to the internet.

I suspect it is the Sophos file which is in the way of my internet
programs now.

So, basically, how can I delete it. I've searched the web for almost
two hours and tried virtually everything without success.

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    About is not the right board for such a question (and neither is the FreeTalk forum) but well, it is an exceptional question and there probably isn't a perfect place.

    First of all, Sophos for Windows is only licensed to businesses and the license terms require that Sophos is removed before the hardware is passed on. Wonder what else has been left on this computer..Furthermore, Add/Remove Programs is the way, and the only one, to remove Sophos. Everything else might leave parts behind. Finally, Sophos_detoured.dll is part of the Buffer Overflow Protection System and therefore not directly related to connect[ing] to the internet, but I can't say how it behaves in a crippled installation.

    The DLL is loaded from HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs (likely listed as C:\PROGRA~1\Sophos\SOPHOS~1\SOPHOS~1.DLL) so if you remove it from there and reboot it should no longer load together with the applications and thus you should be able to get rid of it. But it might not solve your problem.

    Given that a licensed program has been negligently left behind it's likely that also some other bits and pieces remain which might or might not cause problems. Thus I'd rather wipe the disk and perform a clean install.
