Mountain Lion Freezes

Hello, I have been using Sophos AV for a few years and this is the first time I have encounterd a problem.  The problem is when I use the latest version of Sophos with Mountain Lion(ML) my system freezes.  I can not even log in.  To make my computer usable I have to remove Sophos and the only way to do this is to disconnect the internet.  I have tried this on two different machines, mid 2011 iMac and 2012 Macbook Pro 13" and the former has an external hard drive while the latter does not.  Is there any solution to this problem.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • I tried a fifth time and for some reason it worked.  What I had done is first download and run sophos but disconnected and turned off time machine.  The other time I had it hang was during an update so I will try tonight to see if it will hang on the update.

    Thanks for the response.

    Edit:

    What I did in order.

    1) Turn off all programs that sync with some external server.(For example Google drive, Google Play, Mail, iCal, etc)

    2)Download and run Sophos.

The on access scanner seems to be working now.
