Standard Scan or Excluded Items

I am new to Sophos and am curious to learn about best use practices.  I've just installed MacHome version and done a full scan which took almost two hours on my 2011 Mac Mini.  I would like to set it up to scan weekly/monthly now.  Actually, not seeing a monthly option. Hmmmm... I mostly receive email which might be infected (attachements?) and sometimes download new apps.

What files/items would be good for me to start scanning regularly?

Any ideas and tips about how to set this up are welcomed.

Thank you

Neil

PS How so I set this up to only scan incoming mail?

  • Sophos Anti-Virus includes an on-access scanner, which scans ALL files as they are accessed on the hard disk.  As such, you don't need to schedule manual scans, unless you have exclusions set in your on-access scans and want to do a periodic full scan.  In these cases, you just need to set up a scheduled scan, using whatever schedule you want.

As for disabling on-access scanning and just scanning email attachments and web downloads, try my post on creating a folder action to scan specific folders.

There are many articles written about why scanning only downloads and attachments is a bad idea however; these are the files you're most likely to be suspicious about in the first place; the ones you won't be expecting (that arrive and are installed in the background via drive-by exploits, via USB key, over WiFi, etc.) are the ones that you really need to protect against.

Most people do the two-hour manual scan when they first install the product (to check for malware already installed on the machine), and then leave it alone to do the on-access scanning in the background whenever files are created or modified.
