How slow is slow.....?

I've installed Sophos for Mac Version 8.0.1C Threat detection engine: 3.30.0 Threat data: 4.76 on my iMac.

I started to scan my local drive which has 164GB of data on it and it says I have 830,613 items remaining.

It has now said that for the last 2 hours. 

At this rate it could take some years to complete the scan!

It is not showing itself as having crashed in the Force Quit Applications window but it ignores attempts to stop the scan and give up.

Is this normal behaviour?

    The answer is: depends.  Please read the existing threads regarding this issue.

    Short answer: number doesn't increase while it's scanning inside archives, and there's currently a long delay at the beginning of local scans while it attempts to scan the contents of the hidden document revisions folder.  Once it completes that folder, the scan resumes at regular speed.  Fixes are also available in existing discussion threads.  Please use the search box or scan the discussion titles for details.
