SAV hangs on install.

After checking for updates, it reports "cannot save configuration" despite 2/3 of HD is empty. Fix?

This sounds suspiciously like a permissions issue, where it is not allowed, because of systems permissions, to save the config file.
I'd suggest running Disk Utility and repairing disk permissions.
