I have been successfully using Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home edition. Unfortunately, my MacBookPro7,1 (13") (OS 10.6.8) died due to liquid damage. It was brought back to life with a new logic board. The hard drive was intact. However, I couldn't seem to update Sophos after I got the machine back. I then noticed that there is a new version, v8, available, so I thought I'd just remove the old version I had, v7.3.12. I ran Sophos Remove.app. It removed the icon from my menu bar, but didn't remove Sophos Anit-Virus and then just idled for over half an hour. I read a fair bit of the FreeTalk discussion patiently explaining to folks that the uninstall instructions are different for the Enterprise and Home versions and that one shouldn't just trash the files and folders but use the Remove tool.
I read on one of the FreeTalk discussions that I could reinstall the Sophos Remove.app tool from the mpkg, run that, and then that would remove Sophos Anti-Virus for sure. It hasn't. The Install process is now stalled. The progress bar shows the installation to be nearly finished, but it's taken 45 minutes so far without budging the last bit to complete the installation so I can try to Sophos Remove again.
Questions:
1. Is this problem due to the new logic board? Perhaps Sophos doesn't recognize the new hardware it is now running on and is set up to resist removal in this circumstance.
2. Will I be messing up my OS kernel if I force quit the installation of Sophos Remove.app from the v8 dmg?
3. Will I have to wipe my drive and start with a clean install of the operating system to recover?
Thanks for your help out there. I think Sophos Anti-Virus at home is a terrific product and am grateful it is provided to the Mac community gratis.
