Problems encounter when scanning local drive!

I've been using Sophos for a year and it's working flawlessly on my mac, but it would not update to version 8 despite I update it manually. Anyways, my cousin downloaded the latest version of Sophos yesterday, the computer freezed whenever he hit 'scan local drive'. What is going on? I speculate if there isn't enough memory (he has a 15" mbp, 4gb ram); or it's the program itself. I told him not to scan in the mean time. Can anyone explains this to me? Thank you

    Do the logs in console.app indicate anything odd?  4GB RAM should be more than enough.  There are a few good threads on this topic on the forum; a search may help more than running through all the possibilities in a new thread.
