Scan Local Drives runs so slowly that it would take years to complete

I installed Sophos for Mac Home Edition 7.3.0C on two iMac G5's running OS X 10.4.11

One scanned the 490,xxx files in about an hour, which I expected.

The other had about the same number of files and was clearing them about one every 10 seconds... at that rate it would take 1361 hours to complete!

I emptied the user cache, repaired permissions and rebuilt the directory with Disk Warrior and found no change.

Any ideas as to what is going on?

TIA

Chris

  • Another good question which remains unanswered. If they can not talk to you, why should I expect them to talk to me?

  • How much memory/free drive space does this computer have?  When scanning archives, the archives all need to be decompressed to scan the contents; this takes memory and drive space.  If you don't have enough, you'll end up paging memory to disk a lot, resulting in a massive slowdown to the entire OS.  Also, SAV runs at a lower priority than regular software, so if some other process is using up system resources, performance will drop on the SAV scan.

  • There is plenty of hard drive space: 250 GB capacity, 23 GB used, 227 GB available.

What else could be happening here or more importantly, what to do about it?
