Scan Local Drives runs so slowly that it would take years to complete

I installed Sophos for Mac Home Edition 7.3.0C on two iMac G5's running OS X 10.4.11 

One scanned the 490,xxx files in about an hour, which I expected.

The other had about the same number of files and was clearing them about one every 10 seconds... at that rate it would take 1361 hours to complete!

I emptied the user cache, repaired permissions and rebuilt the directory with Disk Warrior and found no change.

Any ideas as to what is going on?

    Another good question which remains unanswered. If they can not talk to you, why should I expect them to talk to me?

    How much memory/free drive space does this computer have?  When scanning archives, the archives all need to be decompressed to scan the contents; this takes memory and drive space.  If you don't have enough, you'll end up paging memory to disk a lot, resulting in a massive slowdown to the entire OS.  Also, SAV runs at a lower priority than regular software, so if some other process is using up system resources, performance will drop on the SAV scan.

    There is plenty of hard drive space: 250 GB capacity, 23 GB used, 227 GB available.

    What else could be happening here or more importantly, what to do about it?
