On-access Scanner failed to set preference

I'm getting the above notice. It just started today. I didn't cange anything and have reset setting to default just to make sure nothing had changed. What is causeing this?

    I'm having the same error. Were you able to fix yours? I am also unable to do any sort of updates as well.

    That message usually appears when the Intercheck process has somehow been disabled.  Have you installed anything recently that might have prevented that from loading at startup?  Have you attempted rebooting your machine?

    Same issue. Didn't try rebooting by itself, but deleted following plists first:

    /Users/<my_username>/Library/Preferences/
        com.sophos.sav.plist
        com.sophos.ui.plist

    Then rebooted. On-access came up running.

    Funny - on macs, since the days of yore (pre-OS X), deleting preferences has always been the go-to solution. Nice that some things don't change.
