mac won't shut down

Hi, I am a new sophos user and not very computer literate. My mac has been running very slowly, locking up, and will not shut down. Is someone remotely using my computer? My os is tiger X 10.4. Help!!!

  • Are you currently running a manual full disk scan with archive scanning enabled?

It sounds like you might be experiencing a situation where all your real RAM memory is exhausted and data is being written to disk instead... and filling up your hard disk as well.  I'd suggest stopping your current scan if you've got one going, disabling scanning in archives for both the manual scan and the on-access scan, and then attempting to restart your computer.

It's unlikely that slowdowns are due to someone remotely using your computer; unlike (some cases in) Windows, when someone takes control of a Mac remotely, you aren't likely to notice it unless they're doing something obvious.  Slowdowns are almost always due to some process eating up available memory.
