Just installed sophos and ran a scan.  It took about 16 hours!  Is that usual?

One threat was found -- Troj/Phish-K, with filename tax.return.request.pdf.html.  It was in a Time Machine backup in November.  Only there and not since, so I do not consider it a great threat.  However, I was unable to delete the file because it is part of a backup.  There must be special routine to delete such files.  Can anyone help me?

  • Yes, on both parts.

You were doing a full scan, which uncompresses all archives and looks in everything you've got, searching for malicious files.  This can take a while.  After you've done it once, just leave everything up to the on-access scanner for the most part; it'll flag things as they get copied to your system.  This should be the last 16 hour scan you need to do.

The safest and best way to remove that file is to open Time Machine, navigate to the file, right click on it, and select "delete all occurances".  There are other methods as well, but this one is generally the safest.
