UPGRADE to version 9.0 of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac HE

Hi everyone,

Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac version 9.0 Home Edition is available: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition.aspx

The headline feature for version 9.0 is Web Protection, offering protection to make web browsing safe. This is the same technology used by our corporate customers, learn more from our website: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/why-sophos/innovative-technology/web-protection.aspx

We've also worked hard to improve the existing features with a number of security and stability fixes. Version 9.0 supports Mac OS X 10.6 and up. This means we've discontinued support for all PowerPC systems and 10.4/10.5 Intel systems going forward.

You can upgrade an existing version 8 installation, or set up a brand new installation with the same installer. Either way, just download and run the installer app. Today you need to "opt-in" by manually running the installer to upgrade yourself, but later this year we'll migrate all version 8 installations automatically.

If you find problems, please post about it here. If you don't have any problems we'd also love to hear that too. If you find a showstopper issue, please let us know and then reinstall version 8 until we can fix it (the installer for version 8 is also still available from our website).

Regarding the Web Protection feature, you can test the two different types of protection with these two links:

URL reputation blocking: http://www.sophostest.com/ then click the "Malware" link about half-way down the page

Malicious content blocking: http://www.eicar.org/download/eicar_com.zip

In both cases, you will get a notification page instead of the real content when the protection features are enabled in the preferences.

Thanks for using our product, keep sending feedback.

  • Hi RandomRain,

I see that ZRL1 already posted a helpful link. We generally do not allow the Home Edition to install over top the business version. The reverse is also true, and we do this to avoid mixing things up on someone's machine; we generally avoid "cross-grades" between the four different flavors of the product, but there are some specific situations that we allow (and therefore regularly test).

  • Hi Bob,

When I attempt to install version 9, I keep getting this error message in the screenshot.

    Can you help with this?

    Thanks!

    Ken

  • Hi Ken,

Can you post some info from your install.log file? Using Terminal you can get the full messages related to our product with this command:

    grep "Sophos Installer" /var/log/install.log

Note that you can also read the install.log file using Console (look under the /var/log path).

Either post the results here, or email them to me, and I can tell you why the installation failed.

  • Perhaps a previous version aborted, and its now complaining (the text "Starting receipt service for he" is the suspicious part). Try removing any existing receipt (in the folder "/Library/Application Support/Sophos/he") and running the installer again. This will treat it as a clean installation.

We've heard of a couple of instances of this happening and will be making some improvements to the product to auto-recover, but until then its probably worth trying to remove the receipt. You'll need to have administrative rights to do this.

  • Sorry for the delayed response as I was traveling.  I followed your instructions and it worked perfectly so I now have v9 running.

    Thanks very much Bob!

  • I upgraded to version 9 today.  I had no problems with version 8.  Since the upgrade my safari is very slow.  I am running 10.68.

    :1017151
  • As a followup to my previous post, I switched of the web protection features and that seems to have helped somewhat but stil is slower than before

  • Apple MacBook 2GB / Mac OS X 10.6.8 / Firefox 29.0 / Safari Version 5.1.10 (6534.59.10) / Sophos 9.0.8 (Threat detection engine: 3.50.1 / Threat data: 4.98 / Protects against 6468518 threats)

Hi, Upgraded to v9.0 overnight when I noticed that download updates were not being collected automatically.

Now Safari no longer works, can be called but just hangs on any valid url inserted; had to bring Firefox back into use, but of course all passwords now lost!! Hopefully my records are sufficient.

    Please advaise a.s.a.p.
