UPGRADE to version 9.0 of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac HE

Hi everyone,

Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac version 9.0 Home Edition is available: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition.aspx

The headline feature for version 9.0 is Web Protection, offering protection to make web browsing safe. This is the same technology used by our corporate customers, learn more from our website: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/why-sophos/innovative-technology/web-protection.aspx

We've also worked hard to improve the existing features with a number of security and stability fixes. Version 9.0 supports Mac OS X 10.6 and up. This means we've discontinued support for all PowerPC systems and 10.4/10.5 Intel systems going forward.

You can upgrade an existing version 8 installation, or set up a brand new installation with the same installer. Either way, just download and run the installer app. Today you need to "opt-in" by manually running the installer to upgrade yourself, but later this year we'll migrate all version 8 installations automatically.

If you find problems, please post about it here. If you don't have any problems we'd also love to hear that too. If you find a showstopper issue, please let us know and then reinstall version 8 until we can fix it (the installer for version 8 is also still available from our website).

Regarding the Web Protection feature, you can test the two different types of protection with these two links:

URL reputation blocking: http://www.sophostest.com/ then click the "Malware" link about half-way down the page

Malicious content blocking: http://www.eicar.org/download/eicar_com.zip

In both cases, you will get a notification page instead of the real content when the protection features are enabled in the preferences.

Thanks for using our product, keep sending feedback.

  • That message indicates the AutoUpdate process is unable to reach our update servers. Do you have any special network configuration or entries in your /etc/hosts file? Was this an upgrade from a different version e.g. upgrade from one of our business issues?

  • Hi Bobcook,

I'm on a Macbook Pro (non retina) running maverick (10.9.1) and I gained a copy of Sophos via my university. I had V8.0.21 before I started having issues with the on-access scanning. I've deleted the software via the applications folder and clearing the trash, as there was no un-installer in my package.

I've downloaded installers for both V8 and V9 in an attempt to install but all I get is an error message for both saying "software cannot be installed ove an existing installation" - see attached screengrab. I have nothing on my mac other than the installers. I can restore the previous Sophos from my external back up's. But once again the onaccess scanning is disabled.

I tried re-downloading from my uni and their link is V7 and the file cannot be opened .dmkg is the extension.

The post below matches the error you're experiencing.

  • I had this problem - I checked the logs for Sophos, and there had been a Firefox Profile Cache file that Sophos didn't like.  After I removed Sophos, and downloaded/installed Sophos 9, the problem stopped and I was able to connect to the server and update again.  My second step was going to be to delete the Firefox profile, but didn't end up having to.

  • I only just now learned that 9.0 was even available. I just happened to check the web site in the course of trying to diagnose what might be causing my system to take a very long time to restart. Does version 8.0.22C even support Mavericks? If not, could that have been my problem? I don't remember seeing any option to subscribe to an email list for updates whenI downloaded Sophos AV, but I'm going to check again. I'm glad I happened to upgrade before the end of support, but         there should be a way to let people know that an update is necessary. I agree that it shouldn't just automatically upgrade to a whole new version, but there does need to be   some notification mechanism in place, especially for a product as important as an antivirus .

    Hey Mac221,

Can you tell me which TOR software you installed? We can at least figure out what is happening and perhaps make some suggestions.

  • Hi JEkis,

Thanks for the note. We haven't yet found the right way to stay in touch with users. Its a tricky problem, we'd prefer to not keep user's email addresses. We try to "spread the word" via this forum, but not sure its effective enough. Open to your suggestions though.
