UPGRADE to version 9.0 of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac HE

Hi everyone,

Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac version 9.0 Home Edition is available: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition.aspx

The headline feature for version 9.0 is Web Protection, offering protection to make web browsing safe. This is the same technology used by our corporate customers, learn more from our website: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/why-sophos/innovative-technology/web-protection.aspx

We've also worked hard to improve the existing features with a number of security and stability fixes. Version 9.0 supports Mac OS X 10.6 and up. This means we've discontinued support for all PowerPC systems and 10.4/10.5 Intel systems going forward.

You can upgrade an existing version 8 installation, or set up a brand new installation with the same installer. Either way, just download and run the installer app. Today you need to "opt-in" by manually running the installer to upgrade yourself, but later this year we'll migrate all version 8 installations automatically.

If you find problems, please post about it here. If you don't have any problems we'd also love to hear that too. If you find a showstopper issue, please let us know and then reinstall version 8 until we can fix it (the installer for version 8 is also still available from our website).

Regarding the Web Protection feature, you can test the two different types of protection with these two links:

URL reputation blocking: http://www.sophostest.com/ then click the "Malware" link about half-way down the page

Malicious content blocking: http://www.eicar.org/download/eicar_com.zip

In both cases, you will get a notification page instead of the real content when the protection features are enabled in the preferences.

Thanks for using our product, keep sending feedback.

Hello, I have maverick Mac os 10.9 and when I installed Sophos AVI from http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antivirus-for-mac-home-edition.aspx it was installed as version 9.0.1 I believe I need 9.0.3 for maverick. How can I upgrade?

    Thank You,

    Melissa

Check About Sophos Anti-Virus from the menu bar with the Shield icon. You may find that it says 9.0.3 even though Get Info on the application in the Applications Folder says 9.0.1 (if you've done an update).

  • Hi Melissa,

Your endpoint should update automatically to 9.0.3, if you are connected to the internet. Check the version in the About box, let me know if you didn't receive it automatically.

  • Hi,

I had Sophos version 8 on my Mac (OS X 10.8.5) and whenever I tried updating it, it gave me the "Could not contact primary server" error. I uninstalled and reinstalled Sophos version 9, but I still have the same situation. Any idea on what's going on? There's a thread in the forum with people with the same problem; it started today (the 18th). Thank you in advance.

I suspect the server could not be contacted because it was down or unavailable for some reason (FWIW, the Apple Forums were down for most of the day too) and I ran into the same thing. But the Sophos server is back up today and updating worked.

I do think, however, that something a bit less ominous than a big black X through the shield might be used to announce an updating glitch since Sophos is still working locally, it's just not getting the very latest virus definitions. Perhaps a "?" might be a better symbol, with the X being reserved for when Sophos goes on strike.

  • Thanks for replying. I just checked and yes, Sophos is finally updating again. Some of the people in the thread created for that say that Sophos is running smoothly too.

I agree about the symbol change; it would make it easier for the user to know what's going on.

  • Curiously when I installed 9.0.3 on OSX 10.9 I had to disable Web protection otherwise any browser was nop:

What happened exactly?  You could enable it again and try a reboot to help it along.

Assuming you're trying to upgrade from version 8 rather than simply trying to update version 9, are you trying to download it from here? It's necessary to install using the installer you can download from that link; you can't upgrade from version 8 to version 9 from within version 8. And when you do run the version 9 installer, be sure "Sophos Remove.app" is present in your Applications folder before you start. (I'm also using Firefox via FIOS and the download I just tried work.)

  • Thank you.  I tried it again...I downloaded the installer.  Then when the  Sophos icon appeared in my dock I hit  "update now" and again got the message "could not contact primary server".

Yes, the Sophos Remove app is in my applications folder.  Any suggestions please?
