8.0.3 released today

Hi everyone,

We released version 8.0.3 today, all machines running 8.0.x should update automatically at some point (might take a few hours to reach your machine). In addition to the normal detection improvements we fixed the AutoUpdate crash that plagued G3 users, improved the behavior for "stuck scans" some people have seen in the GUI, and also includes general stability improvements.

We are still on track to release 8.0.4 with fixes for the reports of kernel panics at the end of May.

As I mentioned, you need to wait for the version in your local data repo to come up to date.  This does not require a re-download of the installer; the autoupdate process will pull down the new version when it is available in your area.

    Thanks!

Not sure what a "local data repo" is. Is this a geographical issue (I am in UK)?

Will the manual download link be updated to 8.0.3?

  • This is a geographical issue, as Akamai automatically points you to a server that is close to your physical and networked location.  This is true whether you're downloading the stand-alone installer or running autoupdate, so the question regarding the version number of the stand-alone installer is not an addressable issue -- the installer will always grab the latest version locally available as part of the isntall process.

Thanks for the explanation...not come across anything like this before. Patience is not one of my virtues!

  • Does this lengthy process of the updates reaching the more remote regions apply to definition updates and the new version 8 live features?

I do hope not as the frequency of definition updates is one of Sophos's advantages....but not if it really takes days to propagate.

  • I presume a: "local data repo" : means local data repository.

By my calculations we are now 48 hours after release (using the time in the first posting as a start point). If so the last post's question is valid - does the av database update also take so long to propagate? Are our computers at risk 48 hours or more after a new database update is released, or is it only the version/engine that takes so long?

  • Contrary what has been said about local repo and this being normal, it isn't, past upgrades were nothing like this, I used to get the latest version automatically even before the release notes where updated.

The process is clearly not the same, Sophos did change something in their update process and not for the better, this of course raises the question if we are gettimg the latest virus definitions when we update.

  • It's been 3 days already... Still nothing.

  • Since Akamai is a network distribution company paid by companies to network their traffic globally - perhaps a "free" piece of software is given a lower propagation priority in the traffic flow compared to paid business.

The UK Sophos site on 2nd May issued a note to say Version 8 would be issued in June!!

Quote: Note: Starting June 2012 we will automatically migrate all customers who have not yet upgraded to version 8

My only concern with the delay is that in several threads version 8.0.3 is suggested to be the answer for some problems but the version seemingly cannot be accessed.

  • 4 days...

I'm really not appreciating the fact that users are being treated differently (presuming there are users actually receiving 8.0.3).

  • I have been using Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition for about 2 years now, before V8 I was a user of V7. The thing I never understood is how do you update the software itself. I know how to use the Sophos AutoUpdate Status Bar for updating the virus list, but how do you actually check the software's update? I didn't even know that V8 was out, Its only when I did a clean reinstall of Mac OS X 10.7.4 and when I redownloaded my applications I found out. So my question is how the hell do you update the software? Instead of uninstalling the old version, and redownloading the new updated app. Does the Sophos AutoUpdate Status Bar update the software as well?? These are the questions that have been on my mind.
