Sophos Shield is not Black-- Is it working?

I installed Sophos today.  I know it's active, because immediately after installing I did a full scan of all local drives (which took a long time!).  But the Sophos shield on the toolbar is not Black, but Blue (a Black shield is supposed to be evidence that it's doing its background scan).    I have the "preferences" set to be performing continuous background scanning.   How can I determine whether the program is working as it is supposed to,  and if it isn't ,   what must I do to make it work?
