Sophos for Mac Free Edition for Mac Tiger Intel 10.4.11

SAV for Mac Home Edition dropped support for 10.4 - it's is very old and doesn't get OS security updates.

Thanks, I am using 8.0.21C, the virus definitions are still transfering to my computer running Mac Tiger Intel 10.4.11. Will I still be able to get the Virus Definitions even though you no longer support Mac Tiger Intel? Can I still use 8.0.21C to scan my computer for any viruses/malware? This is basically the 2 things I require? Thanks, Ken.

From what I can tell the engine updates will most likely continue right up to April 2014 (i.e., v8.0.x will change per month).  The virus definitions (IDE/indentity files) will continue until about May 2014.

After that the install of SAV for Mac will stop updating.  It will still protect your Mac against any and all viruses that we previously released updates for.  However the installation will not receive any new updates and so the Mac will be unprotected against any new threats and will slowly go further and further out of date.  And to add: If you uninstall the software and reinstall from a download of 8, it won't update.

You will be able to scan your Mac in exactly the same way as before - it's just the lack of detection and protection from the latest threats.

Tiger was first released in 2005 and Apple is no longer providing security updates for it.  In fact Chester Wisniewski writes on nakedsecurity.sophos.com that...

Without saying it in so many words, or any words for that matter, Apple appears to have stopped releasing security updates for OS X 10.6.8, 10.7.5 and 10.8.5.

If I want to continue using Mac Tiger Intel 10.4.11, might an alternative be to change to ClamXav 2.2.1 which continues to support Tiger or shall I just change to OSX 10.6.8 which can run well on my iMac Core Duo 2 gig, 2 gigs of ram? Thanks.

I forgot to say switch to OSX 10.6.8 then continue to use Sophos which is my preference.

Upgrading to 10.6 will certainly buy you more time.
